Cholesteatoma

If you’re experiencing discomfort or fluid coming from the ear, a cholesteatoma may be the reason. At ENT Associates of San Diego, cholesteatomas are diagnosed and treated by our board-certified otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors) at our three convenient locations in La Mesa, Chula Vista, and Escondido, California.

What is a Cholesteatoma?

A cholesteatoma is a skin growth that forms in the middle ear, directly behind the eardrum. A few causes include:

  • Congenital abnormality
  • Tear or retraction of the eardrum
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Sinus infections
  • Colds

It often develops as a cyst or pouch that sheds layers of old skin, which build up inside the middle ear. Over time, the cholesteatoma can increase in size and destroy the bony structures of the ear.

Symptoms of a Cholesteatoma in San Diego

The complications associated with cholesteatomas usually start off mild but can increase in severity over time if left untreated. The cyst will continue to grow, and that’s when you’ll experience problems.

Symptoms often begin with a pungent-smelling fluid draining from the ear. The cyst will keep growing, increasing pressure and pain. The increase in pressure can potentially cause hearing loss.

Cholesteatoma Diagnosis

Our experienced ENT specialists use a comprehensive approach to diagnose cholesteatomas. We’ll begin with a thorough examination of your ear using an otoscope, allowing us to visualize the eardrum and identify any abnormal growths or discharge. Additional testing may include audiometry to assess hearing function and CT imaging to evaluate the extent of the cholesteatoma and determine if it has affected the surrounding bone structures.

How a Cholesteatoma is Treated

Proper treatment is essential to avoid serious complications. Surgery may be needed to remove the cholesteatoma completely. Before surgery, however, patients will be prescribed antibiotics, ear drops, and ear cleanings to treat the cyst. This will enable us to better analyze it and develop a surgical plan to remove it.

After Cholesteatoma Surgery

Proper care during cholesteatoma surgery recovery is essential for optimal healing. You should keep your ear completely dry for several weeks, which means avoiding swimming, showering without ear protection, and any activities that might introduce water into the ear canal.

Avoid forcefully blowing your nose, lifting heavy objects, and engaging in strenuous physical activities that could increase pressure in your ears. Follow-up appointments will likely be scheduled with your San Diego otolaryngologist to monitor your ongoing ear health.

Benefits of Cholesteatoma Therapy

  • Elimination of foul-smelling ear discharge
  • Prevention of further hearing loss
  • Reduced risk of serious complications
  • Relief from ear pain and pressure
  • Improved overall ear health
  • Prevention of infection spread to the surrounding areas

Cholesteatoma FAQs

Cholesteatomas can occur at any age. Congenital forms are typically diagnosed in young children, while acquired cholesteatomas are more frequently seen in adults and older children.

It’s possible, which is why regular follow-up appointments with your ENT specialist are crucial for long-term monitoring. Recurrence rates vary depending on the surgical technique used and the extent of the original cholesteatoma, but modern surgical methods have significantly reduced the likelihood of recurrence.
