Conveniently located to serve San Diego

Sinusitis, more commonly known as a sinus infection, is the inflammation of the cavities around your nasal passages (the sinuses). It can last for a few days or, sometimes, for months. At ENT Associates of San Diego, sinusitis is treated by our board-certified otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors) at our three convenient locations in La Mesa, Chula Vista, and Escondido, California.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
Acute sinusitis is a short-term infection. It interferes with drainage and causes mucus to build up. Symptoms often include:
- Yellow or greenish discharge
- Nasal obstruction or congestion
- Pain and tenderness around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead
- Reduced sense of smell
- Cough (which may be worse at night)
Acute sinusitis is frequently caused by the common cold. Sinusitis that lasts more than eight weeks or keeps coming back is called chronic sinusitis.
Common Causes of Sinusitis
However, a sinus infection can happen in many ways besides a cold. It can also be caused by seasonal allergies due to the constant presence of liquid running through the nasal passages, for example. Nasal polyps could be another culprit, as well as a deviated septum.
Your Sinusitis Consultation
Different causes of sinusitis can come with varied factors that can make them tricky to cure. That’s why patients who suffer from chronic sinusitis must come in for a consultation. You’ll first be asked a few questions about the duration and recurrence of symptoms, whether you’ve recently had a cold, and if you suffer from seasonal allergies.
You will then be examined to better understand the severity of the issue and determine the best treatment. Imaging tests, including MRIs and CT scans, may be ordered. Allergy tests might also be requested.
Sinusitis Treatment
Treatment of sinusitis depends on the signs and symptoms. There are several therapeutic methods for sinusitis, such as oral medication or a simple nasal spray.
Balloon sinus dilation (also called balloon sinuplasty) may also be an option. This treatment is offered at ENT Associates of San Diego and involves no incisions of any kind. An instrument called a balloon catheter is inserted, a small balloon is inflated and deflated, and then the instrument is removed. This dilates the affected sinus, restoring proper drainage and functionality.
Sinus Procedure Recovery
Most balloon sinus dilation patients can return to their daily routines within 24-48 hours, though complete recovery usually takes 1-2 weeks. Unlike surgical procedures, balloon sinusplasty requires no packing or splints, allowing you to breathe more comfortably during recovery. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your healing progress and ensure optimal results.
