A weak, breathy, or persistently hoarse voice can make everyday conversations frustrating and tiring. When poor vocal cord closure is responsible, injection laryngoplasty may offer a minimally invasive way to improve vocal strength and function.

Expert Voice Care at ENT Associates of San Diego

ENT Associates of San Diego provides specialized evaluation and treatment for voice and swallowing disorders at locations in La Mesa, Chula Vista, and Escondido, California. Our board-certified otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat specialists) evaluate the function and movement of the vocal cords to determine why a patient’s voice has changed and whether an injection or another procedure may be appropriate.

Depending on your symptoms, your ENT may examine the larynx and vocal cords with laryngoscopy and consider your medical history, voice demands, swallowing function, and underlying diagnosis before discussing treatment options.

What Is Injection Laryngoplasty?

Injection laryngoplasty, sometimes called a vocal cord injection, is a procedure used to add bulk to a vocal fold. A physician injects a biocompatible material into or alongside the affected vocal fold, repositioning it closer to the center of the larynx.

This helps the two vocal folds make better contact when you speak. Improving closure allows air from the lungs to be used more efficiently for sound production, creating a stronger, clearer voice with less effort.

The injected material and expected duration of the results vary. Some materials are temporary and may be useful while physicians monitor possible nerve recovery, while other approaches are considered when longer-lasting correction is appropriate.

When Can Vocal Cord Injections Help?

Injection laryngoplasty is commonly considered when one vocal cord is weakened or paralyzed and cannot close effectively against the other. Vocal cord paralysis can occur after nerve injury, certain surgeries, neurological conditions, infections, trauma, or other medical problems, although the cause is not always immediately apparent.

Vocal fold atrophy or other conditions that prevent adequate closure may also cause a gap during speech. Because similar voice symptoms can arise from very different conditions, determining the cause is an essential part of deciding whether an injection is likely to help.

Vocal Cord Injections vs. Other Surgical Methods

Vocal cord injections are only one option for treating certain voice disorders. For example, microlaryngeal surgery allows us to address structural abnormalities or remove lesions such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, or cysts while preserving the surrounding tissue as much as possible.

Alternatively, reinnervation surgery aims to restore muscle function by connecting a healthy nerve to the affected area. Your ear, nose, and throat doctor will recommend an approach based on the underlying cause of your voice disorder, your symptoms, and your individual treatment goals.
